The Nigeria Higher Education Foundation (NHEF) has announced the launch of the 2026 NHEF Scholars Program, celebrating ten years of impact in shaping Nigeria’s next generation of leaders. The program is aimed at identifying and developing high-potential Nigerian undergraduates by equipping them with practical skills, professional exposure, and access to strong leadership networks.
The NHEF Scholars Program targets outstanding penultimate-year students and provides them with opportunities that prepare them for successful careers and leadership roles in Nigeria and beyond. Scholars benefit from structured internship placements with leading organizations, leadership and career development training through workshops and seminars, and mentorship from accomplished professionals and NHEF alumni across multiple industries.
Eligibility for the 2026 NHEF Scholars Program is open to penultimate-year students currently enrolled at an NHEF partner university. These include Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, University of Nigeria, and University of Port Harcourt. Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong academic performance, active involvement in extracurricular and professional activities, and a proven commitment to community service, philanthropy, and positive social impact.
Key dates for the application process are clearly outlined. Applications open on February 2, 2026, and close on March 13, 2026. All submissions must be completed before 11:59 p.m. West Africa Time on the closing date.
Applications for the 2026 NHEF Scholars Program must be submitted exclusively through the NHEF Application Portal at https://portal.thenhef.org/. Interested candidates are required to create an account by providing their personal details and verifying their email address. Once logged in, applicants can access the application form through the dashboard and proceed to complete their bio-data and essay questions.
Applicants should be prepared to upload a one-page curriculum vitae, a one-page cover letter, and their most recent statement of result. All supporting documents must be submitted in PDF format. Candidates are advised to draft their essay responses in advance, as the application portal does not allow saving progress. Applications should be completed in one sitting using a laptop or desktop computer with a stable internet connection.
Successful application submission can be confirmed in three ways. First, the applicant’s dashboard will display a message indicating the application has been submitted along with the date and time. Second, an email confirmation will be sent to the registered email address. Third, the Scholars Program application tab on the dashboard will no longer be accessible once submission is complete.
Applicants are encouraged to invest time in preparing a high-quality application, as the program is highly competitive. Selection is based on eligibility, strength of essay responses, clarity of career goals, and the quality of submitted documents. A strong application clearly communicates ambition, leadership potential, and alignment with the values of the NHEF Scholars Program.
Helpful application resources, including guidance on writing effective CVs and cover letters, frequently asked questions, and information on industry areas and partner firms, are available on the NHEF website.
Becoming an NHEF Scholar provides access to a transformative network that has supported more than 468 alumni in achieving their professional and leadership goals. Eligible students are encouraged to apply early and take the first step toward becoming one of Nigeria’s future leaders.
Applications for the 2026 NHEF Scholars Program close on March 13, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. WAT.
