The TWAS SG-NAPI grant is a strategic intervention aimed at reversing the “brain drain” in Africa. By supporting young scientists who have recently returned to their home countries, the grant helps establish high-standard research laboratories. This is particularly crucial for Nigerian and other Sub-Saharan African scientists in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) who need the equipment and resources to continue their world-class research locally.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be 40 years old or younger.
  • Candidates must have obtained their Ph.D. within the last 5 years.
  • Scholars must have returned to their home country (in Sub-Saharan Africa) within the last 36 months.
  • Must hold or be in the process of accepting a position at a local academic or research institution.
  • Nationals of eligible countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, and others listed in the guidelines.
  • Female scientists returning from maternity leave are highly encouraged to apply.

Benefits

  • Equipment start-up grants of up to $20,000 for laboratory setup.
  • Consumables and spare parts funding up to $15,000.
  • Research assistant support for up to $10,000.
  • Industrial link grants (up to $4,000) for collaborations with German partners.
  • Specialized “Scientist-after-child” grants for women with young children or during pregnancy.
  • Full funding for a 30-month project duration.

Application Steps

  1. Ensure your home country is on the TWAS list of eligible science-lagging nations.
  2. Draft a comprehensive research proposal with a clear justification for each grant component.
  3. Secure a proforma invoice for any equipment item valued over $5,000.
  4. Prepare proof of Ph.D. completion and employment at a home institution.
  5. Complete the online application on the TWAS website.

Deadlines

  • The closing date for applications is March 31, 2026.
