The Newton International Fellowships 2026 are highly competitive awards designed to support the next generation of international research leaders. Funded by the British Academy and the Royal Society, this program enables early-career postdoctoral researchers to conduct research at a UK host institution for up to two years. The fellowship aims to build long-term international collaborations and enhance the research capacity of both the fellow and the host. For researchers in Nigeria and across Africa, this is a premier opportunity to gain international experience in a top-tier research environment.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Newton International Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Have no more than seven years of active full-time postdoctoral experience at the time of application.
  • Not hold UK citizenship and currently be working outside the United Kingdom.
  • Hold a PhD or be in the final stages of completion (with the degree awarded before the fellowship begins).
  • Research can be in any discipline within the natural sciences, social sciences, or humanities.
  • Applicants must have a clearly defined research proposal and a confirmed host supervisor at a UK university or research institute.

Benefits

The fellowship offers a comprehensive funding package:

  • An annual subsistence allowance of 30,000 Pounds to cover personal living costs.
  • Up to 8,000 Pounds per year to cover research-related expenses, including consumables and travel.
  • Up to 3,500 Pounds to assist with relocation and visa costs for the fellow and their family.
  • Fellows can apply for follow-on funding to maintain their link with the UK after the fellowship ends.
  • Membership in a global network of Royal Society and British Academy fellows.

Application Steps

Applicants should follow these instructions to apply:

  • Find a researcher at a UK institution who is willing to act as your host and provide a supporting statement.
  • Develop a research project that is innovative and provides mutual benefits to both the UK and your home country.
  • Submit your application through the Flexi-Grant system on the Royal Society or British Academy websites.
  • Provide two academic references and one statement from your UK host supervisor.
  • The selection committee evaluates applications based on the quality of the researcher and the proposed research project.

Deadlines

  • Application Deadline: March 24, 2026.
  • Notification of Selection: Successful applicants are notified in late 2026.
  • Start Date: Fellowships typically begin between October 2026 and March 2027.
